The sea lion's features (light brown/golden fur, prominent whiskers, head shape) are consistent with a Galapagos sea lion (Zalophus wollebaeki), which is endemic to the Galapagos Islands. The Galapagos are world-renowned for their abundant sea lion populations and the opportunity for close, clear-water interactions with these animals.

Isla Lobos, near San Cristóbal, is a well-known islet famous for its sea lion colony and excellent snorkeling/diving conditions, matching the visual evidence of clear, sunlit water. The sea lion's features are also highly consistent with a California sea lion (Zalophus californianus), which inhabits the west coast of North America, including the Baja California peninsula.

The Sea of Cortez, particularly around Baja California Sur, is famous for its large and accessible California sea lion colonies and offers exceptionally clear, sunlit waters for underwater encounters. Los Islotes, a group of rocky islets north of Isla Partida, is a very popular and well-known location for snorkeling and diving with sea lions, perfectly matching the visual evidence.
